A big congratulation to Angelina for her nomination and we do hope she wins for her praised role in A Mighty Heart. Click on ‘Continue…’ to see the full nominee list. The Spirit Awards will air live on the Independent Film Channel on February 23rd, 2008.
She has the cutest kids and the hottest leading man, and now Angelina Jolie is up for a prestigious Spirit Award. Is there anything she can’t do? It’s not like anyone’s surprised about her acting chops, though. Back in 2000, Ang won an Oscar and Golden Globe award for her role in “Girl Interrupted.”
Dawn Hudson of Film Independent (the giver of the Awards) sung Jolie’s praises at the premiere. “She could make any film she wants. It’s a feat for such a movie star to be so much in that role.”
The complete list of nominees is as follows:

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
I’m Not There
Juno A Mighty Heart
Paranoid Park
Best Actress:
Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart
Sienna Miller, Interview
Ellen Page, Juno

Entertainment Weekly has named Angelina Jolie as one of the Top 25 Entertainers of the Year for 2007. Although loosing the top spot to Harry Potter author JK Rowling, it is good that Angelina is being recognised for her film work as opposed to what the tabloids are portraying.
Angelina Jolie is currently fulfilling fanboy fantasies in Beowulf with her role as Grendel’s mom. Grendel’s naked mom. In digital 3-D, no less. But energizing her base is hardly the 32-year-old actress’ only accomplishment this year. In A Mighty Heart, Jolie strapped on a prosthetic pregnancy belly, donned a curly wig, and delivered the sort of heart-wrenching turn that reminded audiences why she won that Academy Award (for 1999′s Girl, Interrupted) in the first place. In other words, she acted.
”The belly just slid right on, and a wig is a lot easier than getting your hair done, but learning her French-Cuban accent was difficult,” Jolie says, describing her preparations for playing Mariane Pearl, widow of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter slain in Pakistan in 2002. During the five weeks she shot the picture with director Michael Winterbottom in India – mostly in one house, with a camera following her from room to room as she sometimes improvised dialogue – Jolie was hounded by paparazzi, and a terrorist group reportedly declared a fatwa against her during production. ”It wasn’t like a code red or anything,” she says, ”but we did have a few moments…”
Whatever happened in India – and whatever she’s wearing in Beowulf – her performances in 2007 were far more interesting than her private life. A nice change of pace. -Benjamin Svetkey
An article Angelina wrote herself and it’s a very good article and should interest all humans.

Angelina Jolie, goodwill ambassador to the UNHCR, hopes for progress in bringing war criminals to justice
On a recent mission for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, I had the opportunity to visit a refugee camp in Chad just across the border with Sudan. Sitting with a group of refugees, I asked them what they needed. These were people who had seen family members killed, neighbours raped, their villages burned and looted, their entire communities driven from their land. So it was no surprise when people began listing the things that could improve their lives just a little bit. Better tents, said one; better access to medical facilities, said another. But then a teenage boy raised his hand and said, with powerful simplicity, “Nous voulons un procès.” We want a trial.
ANGELINA JOLIE is calling for world leaders to persecute those who commit crimes against humanity, because it is the only way to hold people to account.
The Hollywood actress and human rights campaigner made her plea to international governments in a new article for The Economist magazine, entitled The World in 2008, in which she urged tougher action against rogue leaders.
And Jolie, a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), hopes to see something done soon to combat the ongoing genocide in Darfur, western Sudan. She has visited neighbouring Chad twice once in 2003 and again earlier this year (07) – to speak to victims of the Sudanese atrocity and highlight their cause.
Writing in The Economist magazine, she says, “Accountability is perhaps the only force powerful enough to break the cycle of violence and retribution that marks so many conflicts.
“Through accountability we can begin the process of righting past wrongs, and even change the behaviour of some of the world’s worst criminals.
“I hope that the Sudanese government will hand over the government minister and the Janjaweed militia leader who have been indicted for war crimes (by the International Criminal Court in The Hague), and that the teenager I met in Chad will get the trial he seeks.
“I hope that those responsible for the atrocities in Darfur will be held to account, not only for that young man’s sake, but for the world’s.”
