With “Maleficent,” the postmodern take on “Sleeping Beauty,” gaining momentum at Disney, there’s also a star who could be surging with it: Angelina Jolie.
Earlier this week, the news broke that Disney had hired its longtime collaborator Linda Woolverton (“Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King”) to work on the screenplay for the live-action take on the 50-year-old hit. Everyone is wondering why Hollywood’s A-listed couple namely Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt didn’t show up at the event of the year – the Oscars.

Sources told E News that Angelina is busy filming “The Tourist” and couldn’t make time for the Academy awards. But E Online points out that Hollywood actors can take a break from shooting in order to attend a big event. Like Jake Gyllenhaal headed back to Canada immediately after the show to resume filming his latest flick. And moreover Brangelina have the luxury of private jet which travels really fast.

Several news portals claim that the couple chose to take their kids to a birthday party in Venice on the awards days. The couple has bunked the Oscars for the third time in a row. Reports claim that since neither of them received an individual nomination they decided to give it a miss even though Pitt’s “Inglorious Basterds” was up for the Best Picture. They didn’t turn up in 2008 when neither Joliet nor Pitt get any nomination and also in 2007 when Pitt’s Babel was nominated for Best Picture.

Angelina Jolie and Darren Aronofsky are in discussions to adapt Ron Rash’s 2008 novel “Serena: A Novel.” The project would be a starring vehicle for Jolie, while Aronofsky would direct. Chris Kyle (Alexander, K-19: The Widowmaker) wrote the screenplay.

The following is how publisher HarperCollins describes the book:

The year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains—but she soon shows herself to be the equal of any man, overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving her husband’s life in the wilderness. Together this lord and lady of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Jolie is currently shooting The Tourist with Johnny Depp, but she has nothing lined up next. The untitled Kay Scarpetta project is one possibility.
