Oct 23 Angelina Jolie in alleged rent con in Budapest 0
Filed in: Film News

The owners of a run-down warehouse in Budapest claimed Wednesday that a security guard allegedly conned Hollywood star Angelina Jolie by illegally leasing her the building for a film-shoot.

One of the owners told AFP that the guard allegedly pocketed 2,000 euros (2,750 dollars) for renting Jolie the warehouse without informing him or his partner.

“My partner called to ask if I knew about a film-shoot in our building,” he said, asking not to be named.

“And he said: ‘you’ll never guess. It’s Angelina Jolie!’.”

The guard “thought we wouldn’t find out about it, because we hardly ever go to the building,” the owner added.

Jolie is currently directing her first film and shooting some of it in Budapest.

The as yet untitled project is a love story set in the Bosnia’s 1992-95 war and Jolie has chosen to shoot some of it in Budapest following difficulties in getting permission to film in Sarajevo.

For the period of filming — which is scheduled to begin on November 10 and last two weeks — Jolie has rented a mansion in a fashionable district in Budapest where she is staying with her husband, Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt and four of their children.

Oct 18 Salt with Angelina Jolie coming to Blu-ray 0
Filed in: Salt

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the spy film SALT, starring Angelina Jolie and Liev Schreiber, will be hitting shelves on December 21, 2010. The Blu-ray will be released in a deluxe edition which will include three versions of the film: theatrical, unrated and unrated extended version. The film stars Angelina Jolie as a CIA spy who is pursued by the government after she is accused of being a Russian double agent. SALT has some pretty decent action sequences and one really good chase scene, but overall I thought it was rather pedestrian. However, it is one you should see for yourself, especially since the role was originally written for Tom Cruise and they changed it for Angelina Jolie when he turned it down. There’s your little movie fact of the day. Special features for SALT will include:
Commentaries:

  • Filmmakers’ commentary
  • Unrated filmmakers’ commentary
  • Unrated extended filmmakers’ commentary

Featurettes:

  • o The Ultimate Female Action Hero
  • o The Real Agents (BD-exclusive)
  • o Spy Disguise: The Looks of Evelyn Salt
  • o The Modern Master of the Political Thriller: Phillip Noyce (BD-exclusive)
  • o False Identity: Creating a New Reality (BD-exclusive)

* “The Treatment” Radio Interview with Phillip Noyce
* Spy Cam: Picture-in-Picture (BD-exclusive)
* SALT: Declassified (BD-exclusive)

Oct 18 Angelina Jolie refutes ‘nasty rumor’ about her Bosnia film 0
Filed in: Latest News

Angelina Jolie is no stranger to gossip, though she usually ignores the wild rumors and falsehoods. This isn’t the usual.

In an exclusive interview, she says ugly accusations about the untitled Bosnian war drama she wrote and is currently directing in Eastern Europe are unequivocally false, and says she intends to handle the drama about the conflict respectfully.

“It’s very simple,” she says during a break in shooting Friday. “There was a nasty rumor that it was about a relationship that started with a rape and torture — and it’s not.”

The rumor spread quickly through the region late last week, outraging an activist group for female victims of the conflict and leading Bosnian authorities to withdraw her permit to film part of the movie there.

On Monday, Bosnia’s cultural minister, Gavrilo Grahovac, changed his mind and reissued Jolie’s permit after her local producer, Edin Sarkic, showed him the script so he could see for himself that the rumors were untrue.

More than 100,000 died in the 1992 war that exploded between ethnic groups in the former Yugoslavia after the collapse of Communism. Serbian soldiers raped tens of thousands of Bosnian-Muslim women, leading to war-crimes trials, and wounds that remain painful today.

Jolie, who has worked for years as a goodwill ambassador with the United Nations, says she doesn’t want to shy away from horrific details of that conflict. Still, she says she’s not making a twisted fantasy and critics speculating otherwise are misinformed.

She confirms there is a romance in the film between a young Serbian man (played by Goran Kostic) and a Bosnian-Muslim woman (actress Zana Marjanovic) but says, “It’s a relationship that starts in the scene we’re shooting today — in a club, before the war. The main characters begin with lovely, happy, beautiful singing and dancing. It’s a normal relationship in that way, how it begins.”

The idyllic prelude shatters. “The film is about the experience that a lot of different people, on all different sides, have as war takes its toll,” Jolie says. “A couple that maybe would have lived a certain life, had the war not begun, end up having a very different story because of the war.”

Jolie doesn’t blame war survivors for being concerned. “Everything is to be expected when you do films about heavy subject matters that have to do with something so sensitive and so recent,” she says. “It’s absolutely to be handled as delicately as possible.”

Oct 18 Angelina Jolie moves forward in Bosnia 0
Filed in: Latest News

Angelina Jolie has apparently gained formal permission to shoot her controversial Balkans war movie in Bosnia, even as one activist says she remains angry about the decision.

Edin Sarkic, a producer at the Sarajevo-based company Scout Film, told Reuters that a Bosnian government minister has now reviewed the script and granted permission for the actress to shoot her directorial debut in the country. The movie is expected to begin filming there in the coming weeks, after Jolie and her cast of local actors first shoot in Budapest, Hungary, where they are currently in production. Sarkic was not immediately available for comment on Monday.

But Bakira Hasecic, a rape victim and president of the Women Victims of War Assn. in Sarajevo, said that she is still upset and bewildered about the process. She has objected to the film because of reports that the movie contains a romance between a Serb rapist and his Bosnian Muslim victim — a plot point that Jolie and her representatives have denied. The status of the film permit was thrown into question last week after Hasecic’s group raised questions with government officials.

“We couldn’t influence the decision and we could not issue any ban,” Hasecic said Monday. “But after we had filed a legal complaint we have become a party in the legal procedures regarding this permit,” adding “the ministry is now obliged to send to us, formally, officially, their decision.” Hasecic says she has yet to receive that, and will decide her next step when she does.

There is still little clarity about the script and the way it characterizes the movie’s central romance. Hasecic said she has asked to speak to Jolie and Sarkic but has not heard from them.

“We don’t mind that [Jolie] has been bringing back the worst memories, that she is sending us back to the worst moments of our lives,” she said. “[But] those of us who were raped lived through [it], and we know what is not true. This story, that a raped woman falls in love with a rapist [could not be] true.” Hasecic added, “We went through a lot, and we don’t need to go through this now.”

In an interview published Monday, Jolie told USA Today that the relationship begins “before the war,” saying it’s a “normal relationship in that way, how it begins.”

Bosnian media say filming on locations in the country should start in mid-November in the capital, Sarajevo, and the small town of Vares. According to one report, among the locations in Sarajevo is the Jewish Cemetery near the city center that was controlled by a notorious unit of Serb soldiers during the war, which went on from 1992 to 1995. The cemetery, which has a stone chapel and one of the best panoramic views of the city, allowed gunmen to snipe the main streets of central Sarajevo.

The main characters in the film are Lejla, a young Bosnian Muslim woman, and Danijel, a young Serb man. Lejla is played by Zana Marjanovic, an actress from Sarajevo. Rade Serbedzija (who has been in a number of Hollywood productions including “Mission: Impossible II” and “Space Cowboys” and will appear in the final two “Harry Potter” films) is also in the movie. In an interview with the Belgrade newspaper Blic, a liberal, pro-Western tabloid, Serbedzija said he plays the father of the main character.

“He is a very good character. He is a nationalist, true nationalist, but he is not a bad guy,” Serbedzija said. “The story about him is very complex.”

Oct 16 Rape Plot Claim Puts Jolie Film In Trouble 0
Filed in: Film News

Angelina Jolie has said she would like to meet wartime rape victims and clarify “misunderstandings” that have led to her film permit in Bosnia being denied.

The actress is in Sarajevo to shoot her directorial film debut, Untitled Bosnian War Love Story.

“My hope is that people will hold judgment until they have seen the film,” she said in a statement.

Bosnian authorities have denied Jolie a permit to shoot amid protests by rape victims who object to its alleged subject matter.

The film – a wartime love story between a Bosnian woman and a Serbian man – was supposed to be shot partly in Bosnia in November.

However, Jolie’s producer says rumours spread that the film was about a rape victim who falls in love with her rapist.

Jolie’s Sarajevo producer, Edin Sarkic, said the rumours were not true and he has resubmitted the application to film.

He has also sent the film’s full script to Sarajevo’s culture minister and expects to get a permit.

Culture Minister Gavrilo Grahovac revoked the original permit this week under pressure from the Association of Women, Victims of War.

It represents the several thousand mainly Muslim Bosniak women who were raped during Bosnia’s 1992-95 war.

The head of the association, Bakira Hasecic, said she has not read the script but “from what I heard, it is about a victim in a rape camp falling in love with her rapist, and that’s not only impossible but the idea is insulting”.

In the immediate aftermath of the war, the issue of mass rape of women during the conflict was a taboo topic in Bosnia.

But the victims then came forward and formed an association that fights for their rights in the courts.

In her statement, Jolie said it would be a shame if “unfair pressure based on wrong information” prevented her crew from shooting in Bosnia.

Oct 16 Jolie to get back licence to film in Bosnia: local producer 0
Filed in: Candids , Film News

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is expected to get a new licence to film in Bosnia after the authorities revoked the initial one over concerns about the script, a local producer said on Saturday. “I was promissed by the Ministry of Culture that the licence will be issued on Monday,” Edin Sarkic told
AFP, adding that he was about to restart preparations for the shooting.

“I will then have twenty days to set up a score of locations and I think it is doable,” he added.

Jolie has already begun the shooting in Hungary of her first movie as a director: a love story between a Serb man and Muslim girl at the beginning of Bosnia’s 1992-1995 war.

The Ministry of Culture of the Muslim-Croat Federation, one of Bosnia’s two post-war entities, on Wednesday cancelled the licence to Jolie for filming scenes in Sarajevo and the central town of Zenica in November.

The approval was revoked when the Women Victims of War association complained after media reports said the film would depict a love story between a Muslim victim and her Serb rapist.

However, both Jolie and the producer claimed it was a misunderstanding and urged the authorities to reconsider the decision to revoke the licence.

The ministry demanded to be given the screenplay before delivering a new licence.

Jolie has said that part of the reason to make the movie was to remind people of what happened during the war in Bosnia and to give attention to the survivors of the conflict that left some 100,000 people dead.

Oct 8 Jolie-Pitts Shower Mindy Cohn With Lavish Gifts 0
Filed in: Latest News

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie really value their pal, 80s star Mindy Cohn.

Last week, Us Weekly broke the news of their secret friendship, reporting that the Facts of Life alum, 44, is godmother to two of the couple’s six kids and that the power couple even gave her a “huge diamond ring to thank her.”

Now, an insider tells UsMagazine.com the ring is utterly “unbelievable,” describing it as “four or five carats.”

Says the source, “She wears it on her right finger.”

When the awe-struck source asked Cohn about the rock — solitaire with diamonds all around in a white gold setting — Cohn replied: “‘Brad and Angelina gave it to me.’”

Brangelina’s generosity doesn’t end there.

“She said she visits [the Jolie-Pitts] wherever they go,” the source tells Us. “They pay for her airline ticket.”

So, how did they become BFFs anyway?

Cohn (who is pals with Jolie’s brother James Haven) has “known Brad for years for years,” the source tells Us. “They are very close.”

Oct 5 As Angelina Jolie makes her directing debut, son Maddox comes to visit her on the Budapest set 1
Filed in: Candids , Gallery Updates

It may be her directing debut on a dramatic film, but Angelina Jolie didn’t look too nervous behind the camera in Budapest.

The 35-year-old actress looked relaxed with her long hair loose over a padded black jacket, as she took time out between takes on the Hungarian set this week.

Jolie is in the city to direct the low budget movie which has been described as a ‘Bosnian War love story.’
She even received a visit from her oldest son Maddox, nine, who was also wearing a coat against the cold.

Jolie is said to have enrolled Maddox and his seven-year-old brother Pax in a school in the Hungarian capital.

‘She has enlisted her children into (an) elite French-American school that they will attend from next week on,’ a source told People about the star’s two older boys.

‘The school has a kindergarten, too, where Zahara and Shiloh will attend,’ the source added of Jolie’s younger girls.
While Jolie’s partner Brad Pitt is filming his new movie Moneyball in Boston, the actress has moved with her children into a plush mansion in the Hungarian capital while she directs the movie.

The film, which is currently untitled, will be set among the region’s conflicts in the 1990s.

Jolie will not be starring in the movie herself but has cast a number of actors from the region.

‘The film is a love story, not a political statement,’ Jolie has said.
