Angelina Jolie, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, spent the day in Thailand listening to refugees talk about their struggles — now she is calling on the Thai government to help Myanmar refugee camps become “self reliant,” UNHCR reports.
The 111,000 refugees live in camps in northern Thailand and are not allowed to work outside the camps or receive a higher education.
The actress said she was “saddened” to meet a 21-year-old refugee woman who was raised in a camp and is now raising her child there.
“I hope we can work with the Thai authorities to speed up the government admissions process,” Jolie said.
“As with all people, they deserve to have their human rights respected,” she continues.
