Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, who recently discussed her past drug addiction on 60 Minutes, lights up the Dec. 12, 2011 cover of Newsweek.
In the issue, Jolie, 36, talks about her new war drama In the Land of Blood and Honey and her decade-long work as a United Nations ambassador.
Drug Abuse, Depression & Suicidal Thoughts
In her teens and early twenties, Angelina admits she was self-destructive, experimenting with drugs and going through bouts of severe depression.
“I knew little about the world and I was completely self-absorbed,” says Jolie.
Angelina has openly spoken of her teenage self-loathing, which led to cutting herself with knives, her fascination with death (and even considered a career as a funeral director), thoughts of suicide, and undefined feelings of frustration.
Looking back on this period in 2003, she explained:
“I used to think I was unstable, because I had this thirst for something. I could never figure out what it was.
I couldn’t sleep at night, and I always wanted to be somewhere else, and I have a window tattooed, this little box, and it’s because wherever I was, I wanted to be somewhere else. And I always saw myself — wherever I was in life — staring out the window.”
In 2001, Jolie was named the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
‘Humanitarian Work Has Made Me a Better Person’
Since then, she has visited UNHCR refugee operations in the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan and Ecuador. The experience completely changed her outlook.
“I’ve become a better human being,” Jolie has said. “I’ve learned the strength of the human spirit.
Angelina, who’s set to make her directorial debut in the drama In the Land of Blood and Honey, still has an edgy side, but having a happy home life has curbed it.
“I’m still a bad girl,” she says. “I still have that side of me. It’s just in its place now. It belongs to Brad…or our adventures.”
In the Land of Blood and Honey hits theaters Dec. 23, 2011.

Angelina Jolie Quashes Rumors of a Secret Wedding and Admits to Fears About Writing and Directing Her First Feature Film
Despite recent reports, Angelina Jolie assures Vanity Fair contributing editor Rich Cohen that there is “no secret wedding” in the works for her and Pitt. “I’m not pregnant. I’m not adopting at the moment,” the star tells Cohen.
“Brad thinks I’m going to be a nightmare,” Jolie jokes, telling how directing her new movie, In the Land of Blood and Honey, has changed the way she will approach her acting career. “I had such a good experience he thinks I’m going to be impatient with directors, which I already am. I get impatient with people working on a film that have their head in their hands like it’s the most complicated thing in the world.”
“I’ve never felt more exposed. My whole career, I’ve hidden behind other people’s words,” Jolie tells Cohen of her screenwriting and feature directorial debut. “Now it’s me talking. You feel ridiculous when you get something wrong.”
“I had the flu,” Jolie says of how she came to write the script. “I had to be quarantined from the children for two days. I was in the attic of a house in France. I was isolated, pacing. I don’t watch TV and I wasn’t reading anything. So I started writing. I went from the beginning to the end. I didn’t know any other way.” She says she then let Brad take the script to read on a trip: “He called and said, ‘You know, honey, it’s not that bad.’”
Jolie admits she did not initially intend to direct the film. “It was something I didn’t trust out of my hands,” she explains. “So by default I ended up putting myself in as director.” Of her decision to use all unknown actors from the region, she says, “It couldn’t be anybody else. It’s their story. It was important that they were willing to do it. If none of them were willing, I wouldn’t have made it.”
Jolie does elaborate on Brad’s supportive role throughout the project. “He’d come in and say what he liked or what he didn’t understand. Like any woman, I would listen to most of it and fight a few things. He’s been so supportive. But it’s hard to separate the person that loves you from the critic, so I don’t think he’s a fair judge.” But she goes on to say that “people will judge for themselves. I think if you make a good movie people walk away arguing.”
Before shooting, Jolie says, she sent the script to “reporters and writers, people of Serbian and Bosnian nationality who’d been through the war. I was gauging the accuracy…. If they said no, I wouldn’t have done it.”

Hollywood beauty Angelina Jolie has admitted that her 6-year-old son Pax is a better cook than his mum.
In the new issue of Vogue magazine, which features the Oscar-winner on the cover, Jolie admits, “I’m not the best cook.”

“But I try to when I can. Any house that we’re in, we all chip in. But the kids are very sweet … so enthusiastic anytime I cook,” she said.
Jolie says she feels her oldest son Maddox, now 9, almost raised her in a way. Maddox seems aware of his mother”s feelings. He encourages her when she cooks breakfast, saying “Good job!”

Angelina Jolie is explaining why she took the role of Elise Clifton-Ward, the woman of mystery who captivates Johnny Depp in The Tourist, which opens this month. It’s because she plans things. “I was looking for a very short thing to do before Brad started filming [Moneyball],” she says. “And I said I needed something that shoots not too long, in a nice location for my family. Somebody said there’s a script that’s been around, and it shoots in Venice and Paris. And I said, ‘Is it a character I haven’t played before?’ And they said, ‘Yes, it’s a lady.’ ” She laughs: Uhhuhhuhhehhehheh. Read the rest of this entry…

PARADE’s July 11 cover story is a one-on-one sit-down with Salt star, Angelina Jolie, who speaks with PARADE’s Dotson Rader about everything from her home life with Brad Pitt and their children to her late mother, a rebellious youth, and run-ins with the paparazzi.
Here are some highlights from PARADE’s cover story.
When Rader asks if their children are the reason she and Brad stay together, “she looks at me like I am nuts.” Jolie tells Dotson:
“The children certainly tie us together, but a relationship won’t hold if it’s only about the kids. You also must be really interested in each other and have a really, really wonderful, exciting time together. We do. Brad and I love being together. We enjoy it. We need it, and we always find that special time. We stay connected. We talk about it. It’s very important. If Brad and I are strong and happy, then our kids have happy parents, and that’s the best thing we can give them.” She adds, “Brad knows me completely, exactly as I am, every part of me. He loves me. The kids love me. They know all my flaws and all my oddities. And they accept them. And so I can feel complete.”
